They can do everything else around this city but this road is like a freeway. Yeah I'm mad, that's my nephew,” Carpenter said.

Alexander Barkely tells ABC 33/40 he is deeply sorry for the toddler's loss and his family. Barkley also says he only left the scene of the accident out of fear. But he called police just minutes later to report the accident.

Relatives described Malik as a typical 3-year-old boy from a close-knit family. He loved Nickelodeon's Paw Patrol and Bubble Guppies. "He was very intelligent, a playful boy. He was just a charming little boy,'' Gatson said. "That was my baby. Every Sunday we had a date. He was joyful , loving and smart."

A 3-year-old boy died after he was struck by a vehicle around 7:20 p.m. near 2120 Northland Avenue Southwest. He was taken to Children's of Alabama, where he later died. The driver who hit the child initially fled the scene, but contacted police within minutes of the incident. He is said to be fully cooperating with the investigation, which is not being treated as a hit-and-run. We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
