Pedestrian killed in early morning crash in Dothan

Police said officers responded just after 4 a.m. on July 17 to the 600 block of Ross Clark Circle after receiving reports of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle.

DOTHAN, Ala. — A 29-year-old Dothan woman was killed early Friday morning, July 17, after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Ross Clark Circle, according to the Dothan Police Department. The victim was identified as Quinteria Reaves, 29, of Dothan.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Ross Clark Circle just after 4 a.m. following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle. According to investigators, Reaves was in the process of crossing the roadway when she was struck by a passing vehicle. First responders arrived quickly and attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Reaves was pronounced dead from her injuries.

The Dothan Police Department's CRASH Team, which specializes in investigating serious and fatal traffic collisions, has taken over the investigation. As of this report, authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances that led to the crash, including information about the driver involved or potential contributing factors such as speed, lighting conditions, or visibility. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to release further information as it becomes available.

Location and Infrastructure

Ross Clark Circle is a major thoroughfare that loops around the city of Dothan, functioning as a de facto bypass and connecting several key commercial corridors, including U.S. Highway 231, U.S. Highway 84, and U.S. Highway 431. The roadway carries heavy volumes of both local and through traffic and is characterized by multiple lanes, frequent commercial entrances, and signalized intersections spaced at intervals along its route. The 600 block, where this crash occurred, sits within a mixed commercial area typical of the corridor. Like many high-traffic arterial roads, Ross Clark Circle presents challenges for pedestrians, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours when visibility is reduced and posted speeds are higher than on typical city streets. The road falls under the jurisdiction of the Dothan Police Department for traffic enforcement and crash investigation purposes.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Alabama law, pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents are generally governed by fault-based negligence principles. Alabama follows a contributory negligence standard, one of the strictest in the nation, meaning that a party found to have contributed in any way to the incident may be barred from recovering damages. This makes a thorough, independent investigation into the facts particularly important in cases involving pedestrian fatalities.

Alabama's wrongful death statute allows a personal representative of the deceased's estate to pursue a claim, and such actions are generally subject to a two-year statute of limitations from the date of death. Compensation in wrongful death cases in Alabama is punitive in nature rather than compensatory, intended to punish wrongful conduct rather than reimburse specific losses. Insurance considerations may involve the at-fault driver's liability coverage as well as potential uninsured/underinsured motorist provisions. Families affected by this incident may wish to consult with a licensed Alabama attorney to understand their specific rights and options, as facts and applicable law can vary significantly by case.
