Coffee run turns deadly on Dothan highway

He got up the next morning to grab himself a coffee because he had been sleeping restlessly for the last two months after recovering from a stroke. However, he never returned.

A 55-year-old Midland City man died early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Montgomery Highway in Dothan, Alabama. According to Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd, Raymond Campbell was hit shortly before 2:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Montgomery Highway. Byrd said Campbell was staying at a nearby hotel with his family and had set out on foot to cross the busy highway to reach a gas station for coffee when he was struck by a car. Emergency responders transported Campbell to a local emergency room, where medical staff worked to treat his injuries. Despite these efforts, Campbell was pronounced dead at approximately 3:00 a.m., roughly a half hour after the crash. Details regarding the driver of the vehicle, the specific circumstances of the collision, and whether any charges are pending have not been released by authorities. The Houston County Coroner's Office confirmed Campbell's identity following the fatal incident. This tragedy underscores the dangers pedestrians face when crossing multi-lane highways in the early morning hours, particularly in areas with limited lighting and fast-moving traffic.

Location and Infrastructure

Montgomery Highway is a major thoroughfare in Dothan, a city in Houston County in southeastern Alabama, carrying substantial commercial and through traffic connecting the area to surrounding communities. Corridors like this one typically feature multiple travel lanes, higher posted speed limits, and long stretches between signalized or marked pedestrian crossings, all of which can make crossing on foot particularly hazardous, especially overnight when visibility is reduced and drivers may not anticipate pedestrians. The presence of hotels and gas stations along this stretch, as in this case, means foot traffic between lodging and nearby businesses is not uncommon, even though the roadway itself is designed primarily for vehicle throughput. Such conditions highlight the importance of adequate lighting, marked crosswalks, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in commercial corridors that serve both overnight visitors and local traffic.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Fatal pedestrian collisions in Alabama may give rise to a wrongful death claim, which under Alabama law must generally be filed within two years of the date of death (Ala. Code § 6-5-410 and § 6-2-38). Importantly, Alabama follows a pure contributory negligence standard, meaning that if the deceased is found to bear any fault, however slight, for the accident, surviving family members may be barred from recovering damages. Alabama wrongful death claims are also unique in that they permit only punitive damages, intended to punish wrongdoing rather than compensate for financial or emotional losses. Only a court-appointed personal representative of the deceased's estate may bring such a claim. Insurance considerations may involve the at-fault driver's liability coverage, and investigators will typically examine factors such as vehicle speed, roadway lighting, and driver attentiveness. Families affected by this incident are encouraged to consult a licensed Alabama attorney to understand their specific rights and options.

An experienced Dothan pedestrian injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the insurance claim.
