Woman dead in early morning crash near Webb

According to the coroner, it is believed Jacobs was driving down Ludlum Road when she ran off the road, hit a ditch, and her car went airborne before rolling multiple times in the field.

A tragic single-vehicle rollover crash claimed the life of a young Dothan woman early Sunday morning on a rural dirt road in Houston County, Alabama. Ashton Jacobs, 21, of Dothan, was found deceased in a cottonfield near the intersection of Ludlum Road and Glen Lawrence Road after her vehicle left the roadway and rolled multiple times. The crash was discovered around 7:00 a.m. when a passerby walking along the dirt road noticed heavily damaged wreckage in the adjacent field. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd reported that Jacobs was ejected from her vehicle during the violent rollover, with her body found approximately 40 feet from the car. According to investigators' preliminary findings, Jacobs was traveling on Ludlum Road when her vehicle departed the roadway, struck a ditch, became airborne, and rolled over multiple times through the cottonfield. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact time of the crash remains unknown, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal accident.

Location and Infrastructure

Ludlum Road is a rural dirt road in Houston County, Alabama, located in the agricultural areas surrounding Dothan. The crash site near Glen Lawrence Road is characterized by unpaved roadways bordered by working cottonfields, typical of the farming communities outside the city limits. Dirt roads in this region often lack lighting, guardrails, and paved shoulders, presenting particular hazards during early morning hours when visibility is limited. The presence of ditches alongside these rural routes can be especially dangerous, as even minor departures from the roadway can result in vehicles striking these drainage features and losing control. The agricultural nature of the area means limited traffic during overnight hours, which may explain why the crash went undiscovered until daylight. These rural roads serve both local residents and farm equipment, with varying road conditions depending on weather and maintenance schedules.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Alabama law, fatal vehicle crashes are investigated to determine contributing factors such as speed, impairment, mechanical failure, or road conditions. Alabama operates under a contributory negligence system, one of the strictest in the nation, which can significantly impact injury and wrongful death claims. Families of fatal crash victims may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Alabama Code § 6-5-410, which allows designated family members to seek compensation for loss of companionship, mental anguish, and funeral expenses. Alabama's statute of limitations for wrongful death actions is generally two years from the date of death. In single-vehicle crashes, potential liability may extend beyond the driver to include vehicle manufacturers (in cases of defect), government entities (if road conditions contributed), or other parties depending on the investigation's findings. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's ongoing investigation will be crucial in determining the crash's cause and whether any third parties bear responsibility.
