A bicyclist was critically injured on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after being struck by a Jeep at the intersection of South Main Street and Litchfield Street in Torrington, Connecticut. Torrington police were called to the intersection at about 3:30 p.m. after a report of a crash involving a bicycle and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. When officers arrived, they found the bicyclist in the intersection with severe head injuries. The cyclist has not been publicly identified. The cyclist was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury for treatment and was last listed in critical condition. Police said the driver of the Jeep was not injured and cooperated with investigators. The Torrington Police Department's Accident Investigation Team responded, and part of the roadway was closed for about three hours while the scene was examined. As of the morning after the crash, no charges had been filed, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone who saw the collision or has information about it to contact the Torrington Police Department at 860-489-2050.

Location and Infrastructure

South Main Street and Litchfield Street are two of the main roads in Torrington, the largest city in Litchfield County. Litchfield Street carries traffic between Torrington and the neighboring town of Litchfield. South Main Street is a major north-south route that serves businesses, homes and through traffic south of the city center. Intersections where two busy roads meet carry more risk for bicyclists, because vehicles turning, merging and changing lanes all cross paths with riders who have little physical protection. Drivers approaching this junction must obey the posted traffic control devices, yield as required, and watch for cyclists and pedestrians. This is especially true in mid-afternoon, when traffic often increases with school dismissals and commuters. Bicyclists are also required to follow the same traffic signals and signs as motorists.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Connecticut law (C.G.S. § 14-286a), bicyclists on public roads have the same rights and duties as operators of motor vehicles. Under C.G.S. § 14-232, drivers must leave at least three feet when passing a cyclist. Connecticut's vulnerable user statute (C.G.S. § 14-295a) sets penalties for drivers who fail to exercise reasonable care toward bicyclists and pedestrians and cause serious physical injury. Connecticut is an at-fault insurance state, so injured parties generally pursue claims through the responsible driver's liability coverage. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may also apply. The state uses modified comparative negligence: an injured person's recovery is reduced by their share of fault and barred if that share exceeds 50 percent. The general statute of limitations for negligence-based personal injury claims is two years from the date of injury (C.G.S. § 52-584). Compensation available in such claims may include medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, and pain and suffering.
