Investigators determined that a black 2006 Ford F-150 became disabled after a tire failure on the highway, causing collisions that left three other vehicles – a black 2024 Hyundai Tucson, a silver 2017 Jeep Patriot and a white 2013 Honda Civic – with “major damage,” police said.

One person was killed and another was injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 285 eastbound at Interstate 75 in Cobb County, Georgia, just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Investigators determined that a black 2006 Ford F-150 became disabled on the highway after a tire failure. This led to collisions involving three other vehicles: a black 2024 Hyundai Tucson, a silver 2017 Jeep Patriot, and a white 2013 Honda Civic. Police reported that all three sustained major damage. A passenger in the Hyundai Tucson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office. That person's identity has not been released. The driver of the Honda Civic was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported. Cobb County police investigators are still working to determine the exact chain of events. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department at (770) 499-3987.

Location and Infrastructure

The I-285 and I-75 interchange sits in the Cumberland area of southeastern Cobb County, near the communities of Smyrna and Vinings and a short distance from Truist Park and Cumberland Mall. It is one of the busiest freeway junctions in metro Atlanta. Here the Perimeter, which circles the city, meets a major north-south corridor carrying commuters, regional travelers and heavy commercial truck traffic. The eastbound lanes of I-285 approaching I-75 carry several lanes of traffic, with entrance and exit ramps nearby, and drivers often change lanes to reach their connections. Overhead signs, lane markings and posted speed limits guide traffic through the area. A disabled vehicle in a travel lane on a high-speed interstate can give approaching drivers limited time to react, particularly at night. The Georgia Department of Transportation's HERO units patrol metro Atlanta interstates to help motorists with disabled vehicles and clear roadway hazards.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Georgia uses an at-fault (tort) system for motor vehicle crashes. This means the party found responsible, and that party's liability insurer, may be liable for resulting damages. Georgia requires minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage. Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may also apply. Under Georgia's modified comparative negligence rule (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33), a party's recovery may be reduced by their share of fault. Recovery is barred if that party is 50 percent or more at fault. The statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims is generally two years (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33). For vehicle and property damage it is four years (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-31). Potential compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, pain and suffering and funeral expenses. In wrongful death actions, it may also include the full value of the life of the decedent. This information is general and is not legal advice.
