Woman who injured 5 after crashing car into Kroger in Athens arrested, charged with felony

Athens-Clarke County Police arrested 40-year-old Lonneshia Appling and charged her with serious injury by vehicle, a felony, and three misdemeanors -- possession and use of drug related objects, DUI drugs less safe, and reckless driving.

Incident Overview

A chaotic scene unfolded at the Kroger grocery store located in the 100 block of Alps Road in Athens, Georgia, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, when a car crashed through the front of the store shortly before 11 a.m. The vehicle, described as a silver Toyota or Nissan Altima in various reports, broke through the front entrance and ended up inside the store near the self-checkout area adjacent to the pharmacy.

Four people sustained injuries in the incident, with two of the victims at the self-checkout station when the car plowed into the building. They were transported by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. According to witnesses, a Kroger employee was pinned between the car and a self-checkout kiosk during the crash. Shoppers immediately rushed to help, moving debris and boxes that had scattered across the floor.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department confirmed that the investigation remains active and all injured individuals are expected to survive their injuries. Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the crash or identified the driver. Kroger released a statement expressing that the safety and security of associates and customers remains their top priority, offering thoughts to those impacted and gratitude to first responders.

Location and Infrastructure

The Alps Road Kroger is situated within the Alps Village shopping center in Athens-Clarke County, located just minutes away from the University of Georgia campus and its freshman dormitories. The store serves as a popular shopping destination for both university students and local residents, making it typically crowded during business hours.

The Alps Road corridor has been identified as a significant traffic concern in Athens. The intersection of Broad Street and Alps Road features a complicated traffic signal setup, inadequate signage, and limited visibility from certain angles that contribute to the risk of traffic incidents. Additionally, this intersection is considered one of the most dangerous in Athens, with high pedestrian traffic necessitating additional safety measures such as crosswalks to prevent fatalities.

Athens-Clarke County has experienced ongoing traffic safety challenges, with approximately 77% of the 6,155 accidents reported occurring within the top 12 identified problem areas. Traffic is often heaviest around the university campus, and distracted driving has been identified as a recurring cause of accidents throughout the county.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Individuals injured in this incident may have grounds to pursue compensation under Georgia law. Georgia's statute of limitations for civil cases such as car accidents and other personal injury claims is typically two years from the date of the injury. This deadline applies to lawsuits filed against private citizens or businesses and is strictly enforced by Georgia courts.

Georgia is one of approximately a dozen states recognized as "fault" states for car accidents, meaning the liable driver's insurance covers certain losses, and proving liability is crucial. Injured parties may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from the incident.

When car accident cases involve insurance companies, multiple liable parties, or severe injuries requiring ongoing medical care, it is essential to begin the claims process as soon as possible. Evidence such as witness statements, medical records, and documentation of the accident scene can become more difficult to gather over time. Those injured should consider consulting with legal counsel to understand their rights and options for pursuing compensation while preserving relevant evidence.

Georgia law recognizes certain exceptions that may extend or modify filing deadlines, including cases involving minors, instances where injuries were not immediately discoverable, and situations involving government entities, which may have shorter notice requirements.
