A man was hit and killed by a car after trying to run away from Clayton County deputies during a chase on the Interstate 75/85 connector in Atlanta, according to authorities.

Suspect hit and killed fleeing at end of chase on I-75/85, GSP says

The crash happened at Langford Parkway, and I-75/85 North was closed there for about two hours between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.

A man was fatally struck by a vehicle on the Interstate 75/85 Downtown Connector in Atlanta early Monday morning following a police pursuit that ended in tragedy. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. just south of Arthur Langford Parkway when Clayton County Sheriff's deputies attempted a traffic stop on a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado. When the driver failed to stop, a chase ensued along the busy interstate corridor. Deputies executed a PIT maneuver to halt the fleeing vehicle on the Downtown Connector, but the suspect exited his pickup truck and attempted to flee on foot across the active expressway lanes. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the man fell in the roadway, and while one vehicle successfully stopped to avoid hitting him, a second car was unable to stop in time and struck the first vehicle from behind. The impact propelled the initial vehicle forward into the suspect, killing him at the scene. Law enforcement officials reported finding marijuana in the suspect's vehicle and noted his driver's license had been suspended 12 times. The collision forced authorities to close the connector and the exit ramp to SR 166 for several hours during the investigation, with traffic resuming around 5:50 a.m. The deceased suspect's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Location and Infrastructure

The Interstate 75/85 Downtown Connector represents one of Atlanta's most heavily trafficked transportation corridors, serving as a vital north-south route through the heart of the city. This section of the expressway, located just south of Arthur Langford Parkway (formerly Interstate 20), experiences particularly heavy traffic volumes at all hours due to its role connecting Atlanta's southern suburbs with the downtown business district and areas to the north. The multilane expressway features limited shoulders and high-speed traffic conditions that make any roadway obstruction extremely hazardous. The area near exit 241 at Cleveland Avenue serves as a critical junction for commuters and commercial traffic. During the early morning hours when this incident occurred, traffic volumes are typically reduced but vehicles often travel at higher speeds. The proximity to downtown Atlanta means emergency response times are generally rapid, though lane closures on this connector can create significant traffic disruptions affecting thousands of commuters throughout the metropolitan area.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Georgia law addresses liability in pedestrian accidents under Official Code of Georgia Annotated § 40-6-92, which establishes that pedestrians on controlled-access highways like Interstate 75/85 are generally prohibited from being on the roadway. However, in multi-vehicle collision scenarios, Georgia's comparative negligence statute (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33) allows for apportionment of fault among multiple parties. Following a fatal traffic accident, surviving family members may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims under O.C.G.A. § 51-4-2, though the circumstances involving police pursuit and alleged criminal activity may significantly impact such claims. Georgia requires that wrongful death actions be filed within two years of the date of death. Potential damages in fatal accident cases may include funeral and burial expenses, lost earnings and benefits, and the value of lost companionship. In cases involving police pursuits, governmental immunity considerations under Georgia law may affect potential claims. Anyone impacted by a serious traffic accident should consult with a qualified Georgia personal injury attorney to understand their specific rights, as the intersection of criminal activity, police action, and traffic collisions creates complex legal considerations that vary significantly based on individual circumstances.
