Car crashes into scaffolding at contentious, vacant Midtown building; driver leaves scene: APD

When officers arrived, they found the driver had already left. Four passengers remained inside the vehicle and were interviewed separately.

A driver fled the scene early Sunday morning after crashing a vehicle into scaffolding surrounding the long-vacant Campanile building in Midtown Atlanta, according to an Atlanta Police incident report. The crash occurred at the intersection of 14th Street Northeast and Peachtree Street Northeast, one of Midtown's busier corridors. When officers arrived on scene, the driver was gone, but four passengers remained inside the vehicle and were interviewed separately by investigating officers. Each passenger told police the group had been on their way to get food when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway and struck a utility pole before continuing into the building's scaffolding. Passengers said they believed the driver lost control of the vehicle but stated they did not know the driver's identity or the exact cause of the crash. None of the four passengers reported injuries, and all declined medical treatment at the scene. The vehicle, a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze bearing a North Carolina license plate, sustained damage and was towed. Passengers were identified as residents of Charlotte and Atlanta. Video footage later confirmed the vehicle struck the scaffolding directly, clarifying earlier online speculation that the structure had collapsed independently. Police have not announced charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Location and Infrastructure

The intersection of 14th Street Northeast and Peachtree Street Northeast sits in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, a densely developed corridor known for heavy vehicle, pedestrian, and nightlife traffic, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Peachtree Street is a major north-south arterial roadway, while 14th Street serves as a key east-west connector linking Midtown to nearby neighborhoods and Georgia Tech's campus. The crash site is adjacent to the Campanile building, which has remained vacant for years amid a long-stalled renovation project that left the structure stripped to its concrete frame. The building's exterior scaffolding has drawn community attention due to ongoing construction delays and related safety concerns. The intersection is signalized and regularly monitored, given its proximity to commercial establishments, residential high-rises, and consistent late-night activity in the area.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, leaving the scene of an accident, particularly one involving property damage, may constitute a hit-and-run offense under O.C.G.A. § 40-6-270, which requires drivers to stop and provide identifying information following a collision. Because the driver has not been identified, any injured party would need to explore uninsured motorist coverage under their own policy, as compensation from the at-fault driver may be limited until identification and liability are established. Georgia's statute of limitations generally allows two years from the date of an incident to file a personal injury claim, and four years for property damage claims, under O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33. Potential damages in cases involving vehicle or property damage may include repair costs, diminished value, and related losses.
