Incident Overview

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:20 p.m., a serious vehicle crash outside a Kroger grocery store on Wesley Chapel Road in unincorporated Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia, resulted in one fatality and two individuals hospitalized with serious injuries. DeKalb County Police responded to the scene near the I-20 corridor after a vehicle struck a parked car in front of the store. The force of the collision propelled the parked vehicle onto the adjacent sidewalk, where it struck a pedestrian before coming to rest against the Kroger building. The driver of the parked vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene; their identity has not yet been publicly released. The pedestrian who was struck and the driver of the striking vehicle were both transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. DeKalb County Fire Rescue also responded to the incident. Video footage from the scene showed both vehicles against the store's facade, and witnesses reported the striking vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed through the parking lot at the time of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred at the Kroger grocery store located on Wesley Chapel Road in unincorporated Decatur, DeKalb County, just off Interstate 20. Wesley Chapel Road is a well-traveled commercial corridor in the southeastern portion of DeKalb County, serving as a connector route between I-20 and surrounding residential and retail areas. The Kroger location sits within a busy retail shopping center, featuring a large front parking lot with pedestrian walkways and a sidewalk directly in front of the store's main entrance — an area with consistent foot traffic from shoppers. Parking lot environments, while often perceived as low-risk, present significant hazards due to the mixing of vehicle traffic and pedestrians in close proximity, limited sight lines, and variable speed compliance. The proximity to an Interstate 20 interchange means the area experiences heavy vehicular volume throughout the day, particularly during afternoon hours.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Individuals affected by this crash — including the injured pedestrian, surviving vehicle occupants, and the family of the deceased — may have legal rights and remedies available under Georgia law. Georgia follows a modified comparative fault standard, meaning compensation may be available to injured parties who are found less than 50% responsible for an incident. Potential claims could include wrongful death, personal injury, and property damage, pursued through the at-fault driver's liability insurance. Georgia's statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims is generally two years from the date of the incident. Serious injury claims may involve compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral and burial costs. If negligent property maintenance contributed to the conditions of the crash, premises liability considerations may also apply. Affected parties are encouraged to consult a licensed Georgia attorney to understand their specific rights and options.
