5 people injured after elderly woman crashes into QuikTrip in Lilburn, police say

Police said the driver was an elderly woman, around the age of 70, and do not believe she was impaired.

A Saturday evening convenience store stop turned chaotic when an elderly driver crashed her vehicle into a QuikTrip gas station in Lilburn, Georgia, injuring five people including two young children. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on December 21, 2024, at the QuikTrip located along Lawrenceville Highway. According to the Lilburn Police Department, the crash injured three adults and two children, ages three and nine. The two children and one adult were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officer Veronica Arnold described the injuries as primarily cuts and scratches from broken glass, though one victim was struck by the vehicle while exiting the store, sustaining bruises and soreness from the impact and subsequent fall. The driver, a woman approximately 70 years old, remained at the scene following the collision. Police stated they do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather information about the circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the building.

Location and Infrastructure

Lawrenceville Highway serves as a major commercial corridor through Lilburn, a suburban city in Gwinnett County approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. This heavily trafficked route features numerous strip malls, gas stations, and retail establishments, creating frequent vehicle and pedestrian interactions at parking lot entrances and storefronts. QuikTrip locations typically feature large parking areas with multiple access points, and storefronts positioned close to parking spaces for customer convenience. This proximity, while practical for quick stops, can increase risks when vehicle operators lose control or misjudge distances. The area experiences substantial traffic volume, particularly during weekend evening hours when residents run errands and commute. Storefront crashes, while relatively uncommon, represent a recognized hazard at retail locations nationwide, prompting some municipalities to require protective bollards or barriers at vulnerable building entrances.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. Georgia follows a modified comparative negligence system, meaning injured parties can recover damages as long as they are less than 50 percent at fault for the incident. Property owners and businesses may also have premises liability considerations depending on the circumstances. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Georgia is generally two years from the date of the accident, making timely consultation with legal counsel important for preserving rights. Victims should document injuries, retain medical records, and report the incident to their insurance providers. Even in cases where no criminal charges are filed, civil liability may still exist. Those injured in such incidents should consider consulting with a personal injury attorney to understand their specific rights and options under Georgia law.
