Driver wanted after hit-and-run crash in Loganville, police say

Loganville police identified the suspect as Jacob Connell of Jonesboro.

A search remains underway for a Jonesboro man wanted in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Loganville, Georgia, that occurred Saturday around 11:35 a.m. The two-vehicle collision took place on Highway 81 near Tara Commons Drive. Loganville police identified the suspect as Jacob Connell of Jonesboro, who fled the scene following the crash. According to a witness statement provided to police, the driver fired a shot while leaving the area, though officials have stated they are unable to confirm whether shots were actually fired. The Walton County Sheriff's Office deployed a K-9 unit in an effort to track Connell, but the search did not lead to his apprehension. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported as a result of the crash. Authorities have since obtained arrest warrants charging Connell with failure to maintain lane, hit-and-run, possession of marijuana, and possession of cocaine. Connell reportedly also has active, outstanding warrants from another jurisdiction unrelated to this incident. As of Sunday morning, he remained at large, and police have not released a physical description or vehicle details. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact 911 immediately.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred on Highway 81 near Tara Commons Drive, a commercial corridor in Loganville, a city in Walton County, Georgia, located roughly 35 miles east of Atlanta. Highway 81 is a heavily traveled route through the area, connecting residential neighborhoods to retail centers, and intersections along this stretch, including those near shopping developments like Tara Commons, often see significant vehicle turning movements and cross-traffic. Corridors of this type are common sites for lane-departure and rear-end collisions due to variable speeds and frequent entry and exit points for businesses. As with many Walton County thoroughfares, enforcement and emergency response in this area involve coordination between local Loganville police and the Walton County Sheriff's Office, both of which responded to this incident.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, drivers involved in a collision are legally required to remain at the scene, exchange information, and render aid if needed; failure to do so can result in criminal hit-and-run charges, as seen in this case. Separately, injured parties may pursue civil claims for damages resulting from the crash, regardless of the outcome of criminal proceedings against the at-fault driver. Georgia generally allows two years from the date of an accident to file a personal injury lawsuit under the statute of limitations, though exceptions may apply. Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering. Because the identified suspect fled the scene, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may also become a relevant consideration for the injured parties. Anyone affected should review their insurance policy details and consult applicable state statutes to understand their specific rights.
