ATM stolen after U-Haul crashes into shopping center storefronts in Cobb County

The front of a Family Dollar and a coin laundry facility had broken front windows and heavy structural damage.

Incident Overview

On Thursday morning at approximately 6:50 a.m., Cobb County police responded to a smash-and-grab incident at Hawthorne Plaza, a shopping center located off Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton, Georgia. Two storefronts — a Family Dollar and a coin laundry facility — sustained broken front windows and significant structural damage after suspects used the rear of a U-Haul truck as a battering ram against the buildings. Security footage captured two individuals dressed entirely in black executing the attack, deliberately backing the truck into the storefronts to gain access. The suspects targeted ATM machines inside both businesses, successfully removing and fleeing with one unit while leaving the second behind. Cobb County police have not yet identified or apprehended those responsible. The investigation remains active and ongoing. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and are asking anyone with relevant information to contact Cobb County Police Department.

Location and Infrastructure

Hawthorne Plaza is a retail shopping center situated along Veterans Memorial Highway (also designated as Georgia State Route 360) in Mableton, an unincorporated community in southwestern Cobb County. Veterans Memorial Highway is a major commercial corridor in the area, lined with strip malls, service businesses, and retail centers that serve the densely populated surrounding neighborhoods. The roadway carries significant vehicle traffic throughout the day and into early morning hours, making it accessible to commercial vehicles such as rental trucks without drawing immediate suspicion, particularly during pre-dawn hours. Mableton, which has seen ongoing development and population growth in recent years, falls under the jurisdiction of the Cobb County Police Department for law enforcement services. The shopping center's layout, typical of strip-style retail plazas, features storefronts with large plate-glass windows and direct parking-lot access — features that, while commercially practical, can present physical vulnerability to vehicle-ramming attacks.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Property owners and businesses affected by this type of criminal incident in Georgia have several potential avenues for legal and financial recovery. Under Georgia law, commercial property owners may file insurance claims under their commercial property policy for structural damage, including storefront windows, facades, and interior fixtures. Business interruption coverage, if included in the policy, may also apply to compensate for lost revenue during repair periods. ATM owners — whether the businesses themselves or third-party operators — may have separate equipment or theft insurance policies covering the stolen units and their contents. Georgia's statute of limitations for property damage claims is generally four years under O.C.G.A. § 9-3-30, though criminal restitution timelines differ. If suspects are identified and prosecuted, victims may be entitled to pursue restitution through the criminal court process. Affected business owners are encouraged to document all damage thoroughly and notify their insurers promptly to preserve their rights under applicable policies.
