Man accused of DUI in deadly hit-and-run crash along busy Sandy Springs road

Sanders was arrested and charged with DUI (drugs), reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, hit and run, and vehicular homicide in the first degree.

In the early morning hours of Friday, Sandy Springs Police Department responded to reports of a serious hit-and-run collision on Roswell Road near Mystic Place. The incident, which claimed one victim's life, resulted in multiple charges against the driver who fled the scene. Following swift investigative work, authorities apprehended Robert Sanders, who according to police had been using drugs prior to operating his vehicle. Sanders now faces serious charges including first-degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and hit-and-run. Emergency responders were dispatched immediately following the crash, but despite their efforts, one person succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The victim's identity and age have not been released to the public at this time as authorities work to notify next of kin. Sandy Springs Police Department has expressed condolences to the victim's family as the investigation continues.

Location and Infrastructure

The collision occurred on Roswell Road in the vicinity of Mystic Place, a busy corridor that serves as one of Sandy Springs' primary thoroughfares. This stretch of Roswell Road experiences heavy traffic volume throughout the day as it connects northern suburban communities to Atlanta proper. The area features numerous commercial establishments, residential complexes, and retail outlets, generating consistent pedestrian and vehicular activity. Mystic Place intersects with Roswell Road in a zone known for its complex traffic patterns, particularly during peak hours. The corridor features multiple lanes in each direction with numerous access points to businesses and side streets, creating potential conflict points for drivers. Traffic signals and turn lanes manage the flow of vehicles, but visibility can be compromised during nighttime hours, which may have been a contributing factor in this early morning collision.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, victims of DUI-related crashes and their families have specific legal protections. Georgia operates under a modified comparative negligence system, where injured parties may recover damages as long as they are less than 50% at fault. The state's statute of limitations generally allows two years from the date of the accident to file personal injury claims and four years for property damage. In fatal accident cases like this one, surviving family members may pursue wrongful death claims seeking compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, funeral costs, and pain and suffering. Georgia's dram shop laws may also apply if the driver was served alcohol while visibly intoxicated at a commercial establishment before the crash. Additionally, punitive damages may be available in cases involving DUI, as Georgia courts recognize the need to deter especially dangerous behavior. Insurance claims must typically be filed promptly, as delays can compromise coverage eligibility.
