Crash At the Allen County and Whitley County Line

Preliminary investigation indicates both vehicles were traveling southeast on U.S. 33 when the semi-truck pulled out in front of the gray van.

On February 4th, 2026, at approximately 4:12 p.m., the Allen County Sheriff's Department responded to a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of U.S. 33 and County Road 300 North. The incident involved a gray Dodge van and a red and white semi-truck, with the van ultimately overturning in a roadside ditch. According to preliminary investigation findings, both vehicles were traveling southeast on U.S. 33 when the semi-truck pulled directly into the path of the van. In response, the van's driver attempted to pass the semi-truck along the shoulder. As the semi-truck turned west onto County Road 300 North, the two vehicles collided near the Allen County border, resulting in the van overturning. Emergency responders transported the van's driver to a local hospital where the driver was listed in stable condition. The Allen County Sheriff's Department continues investigating the circumstances of the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that alcohol was not a contributing factor in this incident.

Location and Infrastructure

U.S. 33 is a major state highway that serves as a critical transportation corridor in northeastern Indiana, handling both local and through traffic. The intersection with County Road 300 North marks an important junction in the area, situated near the Allen County border. This region experiences moderate to heavy traffic volumes, particularly during afternoon commute hours when this incident occurred. The shoulder areas along U.S. 33 in this location may present challenges for drivers attempting to pass larger vehicles, as the road's configuration and traffic patterns require careful navigation. County Road 300 North intersects U.S. 33 at a point where turning movements can create visibility and timing complications, particularly during peak traffic periods. Understanding the roadway characteristics and typical traffic flow in this area is essential for drivers to navigate safely.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Indiana traffic laws establish clear rules governing vehicle operation, passing procedures, and intersection safety. Drivers have a legal duty to maintain control of their vehicles and to avoid actions that create unreasonable risks to others on the roadway. In multi-vehicle collisions, liability determination depends on establishing which driver violated traffic laws or failed to exercise reasonable care. Indiana's comparative fault statute allows injured parties to recover damages even if partially at fault, though recovery amounts are reduced by the percentage of fault assigned to them. Individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents may pursue claims through insurance channels for medical expenses, lost wages, and other economic damages. Indiana law establishes specific time limits, known as statutes of limitations, for filing legal claims—typically three years from the accident date for personal injury cases. Those injured should document injuries, seek medical evaluation promptly, and preserve evidence. Consulting with appropriate legal professionals can help affected parties understand their rights and available remedies under Indiana law.
