A pedestrian died after being struck by a motorcycle in a hit-and-run crash in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Sunday evening. According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 8 p.m. on Lafayette Street near its intersection with Wayne Street. Police said the man was crossing the roadway when he was hit by a motorcycle, and the crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the man to a local hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later died from his injuries. The victim was not publicly identified in initial reports. Lafayette Street was closed for several hours while officers and emergency crews worked the scene and investigators gathered evidence. No arrest has been announced, and police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the motorcycle or its rider to contact them immediately.

Location and Infrastructure

Lafayette Street is one of the primary north–south corridors through downtown Fort Wayne, connecting the city's central business district with neighborhoods to the south and carrying a steady mix of commuter, commercial, and residential traffic. The crash site near Wayne Street sits within a few blocks of the Allen County Courthouse and the core of the downtown grid, an area where pedestrians regularly cross between offices, residences, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Downtown intersections in this area are generally controlled by traffic signals and marked crosswalks, but evening hours bring reduced visibility, and motorcycles can be harder for pedestrians to see and judge for speed. Lafayette Street has been the site of several serious pedestrian and motorcycle crashes in recent years, underscoring the importance of caution from drivers, riders, and people on foot throughout this corridor.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Indiana Code § 9-26-1-1.1, a driver involved in a crash resulting in injury or death must stop, provide identifying information, render reasonable assistance, and notify law enforcement; leaving the scene of a fatal crash can be prosecuted as a felony. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault system (Ind. Code § 34-51-2), under which an injured party's recovery may be reduced by their percentage of fault and barred if that share exceeds 50 percent. Pedestrian and driver right-of-way duties are set out in Ind. Code § 9-21-17. When an at-fault party cannot be identified, uninsured motorist coverage under the victim's or a household member's auto policy may become relevant. Indiana generally imposes a two-year limitation period for both personal injury and wrongful death claims. Damages in wrongful death actions may include medical and funeral expenses, lost earnings, and loss of love, care, and companionship, depending on the decedent's circumstances.
