Pile-up crash on I-69 southbound near Markle seriously injures 2

According to a press release from the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at around 5:25 a.m. Saturday, an SUV struck a trailer, spun out, and was then struck head-on by another car.

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 69 South near mile marker 283 in Markle, Indiana, sent two people to the hospital and shut down all southbound lanes for several hours early Saturday morning. According to the Huntington County Sheriff's Office, the chain-reaction collision began around 5:25 a.m. on June 20, 2026, when an SUV traveling south struck the trailer of a Walmart semi-truck, causing the SUV to spin out and come to rest facing north in the right travel lane. The SUV driver called 911 to report the situation, but moments later a Jeep approaching the scene failed to see the disabled SUV and struck it head-on, ejecting the SUV's driver onto the roadside. The Jeep came to rest in the left passing lane, where a fourth vehicle attempting to avoid the wreckage sideswiped it. The semi-truck driver and the fourth vehicle's occupant were evaluated by medics at the scene and cleared. The Jeep's driver was transported to a nearby hospital, while the SUV's driver was airlifted for treatment. Investigators cited poor visibility and adverse weather as contributing factors. Southbound I-69 reopened by 10 a.m. Saturday.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred on Interstate 69 South near mile marker 283, a stretch of interstate that runs through Huntington County near the town of Markle, Indiana, southeast of Fort Wayne. This segment of I-69 is a heavily traveled freight and commuter corridor connecting Fort Wayne to Indianapolis, carrying significant commercial truck traffic, including freight haulers like the Walmart semi-truck involved in this incident. Like much of rural interstate Indiana, this section features limited lighting and standard reflective lane markings, conditions that can reduce visibility during early-morning hours or inclement weather. The presence of a disabled vehicle stopped in an active travel lane—particularly one facing the wrong direction—creates an acute hazard on high-speed interstates, especially when compounded by reduced visibility. Huntington County emergency responders and Indiana State Police routinely patrol this corridor given its traffic volume and history of weather-related incidents.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Indiana follows a modified comparative fault system under Indiana Code § 34-51-2-5, meaning a party found 51% or more at fault is barred from recovering damages, while parties found less than 51% at fault may recover damages reduced by their percentage of fault. Determining liability in multi-vehicle crashes like this one often requires careful review of each driver's actions, road conditions, and visibility at the time of impact. Indiana law generally requires drivers to carry minimum liability insurance, and underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage can be critical when multiple vehicles and injuries are involved. Under Indiana Code § 34-11-2-4, injured parties generally have two years from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Potential compensation in cases like this may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. Anyone affected should consult their insurance policy and a qualified professional to understand their specific rights.
