IMPD: At least 4 taken to hospital after private bus overturns on Indy's northwest side

An IMPD spokesperson said only minor injuries were reported, and the private bus was the sole vehicle involved.

At least four people were transported to local hospitals after a small private bus rolled onto its side in a crash on Indianapolis' northwest side Tuesday, September 1. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the intersection of West 56th Street and Lafayette Road just after 7 a.m. following a report of an accident with injuries. A 13News crew arriving at the scene observed multiple occupants being loaded into ambulances while others were evaluated by medics on site. According to an IMPD spokesperson, the private bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash, and all injuries reported were minor. The four individuals taken to area hospitals were described as "awake and breathing" but complaining of pain at the time of transport. Police confirmed that everyone aboard the bus was an adult. The cause of the crash had not been determined as of the initial report, and the incident remains under investigation. Emergency crews cleared the scene relatively quickly, with the disabled bus removed from the roadway by tow truck within a couple of hours of the initial call.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred at the intersection of West 56th Street and Lafayette Road, a signalized intersection in Indianapolis' Pike Township area on the city's northwest side. Lafayette Road is a heavily traveled diagonal corridor connecting downtown Indianapolis to the city's northwest suburbs, carrying a mix of commuter, commercial, and local traffic throughout the day. West 56th Street is a major east-west arterial that intersects several similarly busy corridors along this stretch. The combination of a diagonal roadway meeting a standard grid street can create irregular intersection geometry and sightline challenges for drivers. The area includes nearby schools, retail centers, and residential neighborhoods, meaning pedestrian and vehicle volumes can be significant during morning commute hours, when this crash occurred.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Indiana follows a modified comparative fault system, meaning an injured party's compensation may be reduced by their percentage of fault, and recovery is barred if they are found more than 50% at fault. Under Indiana Code § 34-11-2-4, individuals generally have two years from the date of an accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Because this crash involved a private bus, questions of insurance coverage may involve commercial liability policies, which often carry different requirements and higher coverage limits than standard personal auto policies. Passengers injured in such incidents may be entitled to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages, depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation. Anyone involved should preserve documentation, including medical records and any communication with insurers, as claims progress.
