One person is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle and school bus in Tippecanoe County

Investigators say the bus was attempting to turn left onto S.R. 28, when the motorcycle heading west on that road, hit the bus.

A motorcyclist was killed on Friday, May 15, 2026, after colliding with a Tippecanoe School Corporation school bus at the intersection of State Road 28 and County Road 400 East in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. The crash occurred just after 4:00 p.m. According to Indiana State Police, the school bus driver was heading south on County Road 400 East and stopped at the intersection with SR 28. As the bus entered the intersection to turn left onto eastbound SR 28, a motorcyclist traveling westbound on SR 28 collided with the bus. First responders attempted life-saving measures on the motorcyclist, but the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the deceased is pending release by the Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office following proper identification and family notification. Four students from Wainwright Middle School were on board the bus at the time of the crash; none of the students nor the bus driver were reported to be injured. Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office, the Randolph/Clarks Hill Fire Department, and Tippecanoe County EMS. The crash remains under active investigation.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred at the intersection of State Road 28 and County Road 400 East, just east of the small community of Romney in Tippecanoe County. SR 28 is a two-lane rural state highway running east–west through north-central Indiana, serving as a primary connector between communities in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties. County Road 400 East intersects SR 28 perpendicularly, creating a T-intersection typical of the region's rural road grid. Rural intersections of this type — where county roads meet higher-speed state highways — present well-documented visibility and judgment challenges, particularly for drivers executing left turns across oncoming traffic lanes. The area surrounding Romney consists largely of open farmland, which can contribute to higher travel speeds on SR 28 and make it difficult for drivers to accurately gauge the speed of approaching vehicles. Indiana State Police utilized a crash reconstructionist to conduct the preliminary investigation, indicating the complexity of the collision dynamics at this location.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Fatalities involving motorcycles and other vehicles in Indiana trigger several important legal frameworks. Under Indiana Code, all motorists owe a duty of care to other road users, and left-turn accidents are frequently subject to fault analysis under Indiana's comparative fault statute (IC 34-51-2), which allows damages to be apportioned based on each party's degree of responsibility. The estate of a deceased motorcyclist may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim under IC 34-23-1. Indiana's statute of limitations generally allows two years from the date of death to file a civil lawsuit. Applicable insurance considerations include the at-fault driver's liability coverage, as well as any underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage the motorcyclist may have carried. When a government-contracted school bus operator is involved, additional notice requirements and procedural rules may apply. Families of the deceased are encouraged to consult with a licensed Indiana attorney to understand the full scope of their legal rights and options.

An experienced Tippecanoe County personal injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the insurance claim.
