Motorcyclist killed in Tuesday’s crash identified

While crossing the northbound lanes of U.S. 231, the Honda failed to yield the right-of-way to Ray, who was traveling northbound on U.S. 231.

A 21-year-old Lafayette woman, Ashley Ray, died Tuesday afternoon following a serious crash at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and U.S. 231 in West Lafayette, Indiana. According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department, the collision occurred just before 2:30 p.m. when a Honda CR-V driven by 69-year-old Joseph Gross of Lafayette was traveling southbound on the newly constructed section of U.S. 231 and attempted to turn left onto Veterans Memorial Parkway. While crossing the northbound lanes, the Honda failed to yield the right-of-way to Ray, who was traveling northbound on her motorcycle. The two vehicles collided within the intersection, and Ray was thrown from her motorcycle, subsequently striking another vehicle that was stopped at a red light. Ray was pronounced dead, and her identity was later confirmed by the Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office. The crash remains under investigation by local authorities, and no additional injuries have been reported regarding the occupants of the other vehicles involved.

Location and Infrastructure

The intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and U.S. 231 sits along a recently constructed stretch of U.S. 231 in West Lafayette, an area that has seen substantial roadway development in recent years as part of regional infrastructure expansion connecting Lafayette and West Lafayette. U.S. 231 functions as a major north-south corridor carrying significant commuter and commercial traffic, while Veterans Memorial Parkway serves as a key east-west connector linking residential areas to commercial districts. The intersection is signal-controlled, with left-turn maneuvers requiring drivers to cross active oncoming lanes—a configuration that demands careful judgment of gap distances and oncoming vehicle speeds, particularly for motorcycles, which can be harder to detect due to their smaller profile.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Indiana law, drivers making left turns must yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic, and a failure to do so resulting in injury or death may constitute a basis for civil liability. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault standard, meaning compensation may be reduced if any party is found partially at fault, though a claimant found 51% or more at fault is barred from recovery. Surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim, which can seek damages for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship. Indiana's statute of limitations for wrongful death and personal injury claims is generally two years from the date of the incident. Insurance considerations may involve liability coverage from the at-fault driver's policy, as well as potential uninsured/underinsured motorist claims. This information is general in nature and does not constitute legal advice.

An experienced West Lafayette personal injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the insurance claim.
