Lafayette Parish Motorcyclist Killed in a Crash

As is standard in a fatality case, toxicology samples were taken, and they will be analyzed by a lab.

A fatal motorcycle collision on Louisiana Highway 724 near Lagneaux Road in Lafayette Parish has claimed the life of a 21-year-old Duson man. The crash occurred on Thursday, March 13, shortly before 1:30 p.m. According to Louisiana State Police Troop I, a 2023 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 724 when it failed to yield to an oncoming 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling eastbound. The Tacoma's driver attempted a left turn onto Lagneaux Road and crossed directly into the motorcycle's path. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Tacoma, ejecting the rider, 21-year-old Gavin Recktenwald of Duson, from the bike. Emergency responders arrived on scene, but Recktenwald was pronounced dead at the location. Standard toxicology samples were collected from involved parties and submitted for laboratory analysis. The crash remains under active investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop I, and the circumstances leading to the failure to yield have not yet been fully determined.

Location and Infrastructure

Louisiana Highway 724 is a two-lane rural highway running through Lafayette Parish in south-central Louisiana, serving as a key connector road for communities including Duson and surrounding areas. The intersection with Lagneaux Road represents a common rural cross-traffic point where turning movements require drivers to cross oncoming lanes of travel. This stretch of LA Hwy 724 is characteristic of many southwest Louisiana rural corridors — relatively flat terrain with open sightlines, yet subject to higher travel speeds that can reduce reaction time for turning maneuvers. The Duson community sits just west of the City of Lafayette, and this corridor experiences a blend of local residential traffic and commuter use. Left-turn movements at uncontrolled or stop-controlled rural intersections are a well-documented contributing factor in motorcycle-involved crashes nationwide, making driver awareness at such junctions especially critical.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Louisiana law, all drivers have a duty to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic before executing a left turn, as governed by Louisiana Revised Statute RS 32:122. A failure to yield resulting in a fatality may give rise to civil liability for wrongful death and survival action claims under Louisiana Civil Code Articles 2315 and 2315.2. Surviving family members — including parents, siblings, and other qualifying dependents — may be entitled to pursue compensation for damages including loss of companionship, funeral and burial expenses, medical expenses incurred prior to death, and lost future earnings. Louisiana's prescriptive period (statute of limitations) for personal injury and wrongful death claims is generally one year from the date of the incident, making timely legal consultation important. Louisiana operates under a pure comparative fault system, meaning liability may be apportioned among multiple parties. Those affected should consult with a licensed Louisiana attorney to understand their specific rights.
