2 dead in DeSoto County collision

A woman and a child died Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 55 in DeSoto County in northwest Mississippi. Rasco says an investigation shows the SUV was going north in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with the UPS truck. Multiple media outlets report that Sheriff Bill Rasco says a UPS truck and an SUV collided in the interstate's southbound lanes near the Coldwater Bridge about 3:30 a.m. He says the UPS driver was not seriously injured and the identities of the woman and child have not been released. Rasco says both vehicles caught fire after the accident.

Desoto Co. coroner identifies mom, child killed in crash

The DeSoto County coroner identified the woman and child who died in a fiery crash in Hernando, Mississippi early Thursday morning. The woman, who was driving with her daughter in an SUV, is identified as Susan Overton of Jonesboro, Arkansas. DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said Overton was driving on the wrong side of Interstate 55 when she collided head on with a UPS truck. I-55 was shut down from Commerce Street to the DeSoto/Tate County line near the Coldwater bridge for hours after the crash. The UPS driver is OK. Sheriff Rasco said he has no idea why Overton was driving the wrong way, but hopes investigators can make that determination.

DUI history revealed for mother driving in fatal I-55 crash

The mother behind the wheel of a fatal crash on Interstate 55 in DeSoto County has a history of Driving Under the Influence. "But after a couple of times, especially even going state to state, yeah I think there should be some punishment." Overton's first day in court was set for September 14th--just 3 weeks after she and her daughter died in the I-55 crash. Overton was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 55 at 4:30 Thursday morning. Investigators have not determined why Overton was going the wrong way down the freeway.

DeSoto County authorities ID 9-year-old killed in I-55 crash

The child killed in a fiery head-on crash on Interstate 55 in DeSoto County has been identified. Maxwell died instantly. Both were killed Thursday when the SUV, traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-55 near Hernando, crashed head-on into a UPS tractor-trailer. The crash spurred a second fatal wreck, when a minivan driven by 67-year-old Robert C. Maxwell, of Hinds County, Mississippi, ran under the rear of an 18-wheeler. DeSoto County Coroner Jeffrey Pounders tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1hyuYg1 ) the 9-year-old was Georgia Overton, the daughter of the SUV's driver, 49-year-old Susan Overton, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, who also died in the wreck.
