Driver crashes truck, downs pole as he allegedly flees ICE in Teaneck
A man crashed his truck, snapping a utility pole, while fleeing from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Teaneck on July 26, police said.
On Sunday, July 26, 2026, just before 11:30 a.m., the Teaneck Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a serious crash at the intersection of Queen Anne Road and Walraven Drive in Teaneck, New Jersey. According to police, a 2017 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west on Walraven Drive while being pursued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when the driver struck a parked 2026 Nissan Rogue. The impact pushed the Nissan into a nearby utility pole, snapping it and sending live wires down onto the roadway and surrounding vehicles. One of the affected parked cars was occupied at the time, and the occupant was trapped inside for approximately an hour until PSE&G crews arrived to safely secure the downed lines. The Toyota's driver, later identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Luis Angel Cifuentes Rodas, complained of head pain but declined medical treatment at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Cifuentes Rodas was arrested by ICE agents on scene and issued motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving and driving on a sidewalk.
Location and Infrastructure
The intersection of Queen Anne Road and Walraven Drive sits within a residential section of Teaneck, a township in Bergen County, New Jersey. Queen Anne Road is a well-traveled local corridor connecting several neighborhoods, and intersections along this stretch typically rely on standard stop-controlled or signalized traffic devices rather than heavy commercial infrastructure. Utility poles carrying PSE&G power lines line many residential streets in this part of Teaneck, including Walraven Drive, making downed-wire incidents a serious hazard when vehicle collisions occur near them. The area is primarily residential, with on-street parking common along Walraven Drive, which is why a parked vehicle was struck in this incident. Drivers and pedestrians in this part of Bergen County should remain alert to the mix of local traffic, parked cars, and above-ground utility lines common throughout the township.
Legal Rights and Considerations
Under New Jersey law, drivers involved in motor vehicle collisions may be liable for damages resulting from negligent or reckless operation of a vehicle, including reckless driving as charged in this case. New Jersey follows a no-fault insurance system, meaning parties typically first turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage for medical expenses, regardless of fault, though additional claims may be pursued depending on the severity of injury and policy limits. Property owners and vehicle owners affected by damage, including the owners of the parked Nissan Rogue and any utility infrastructure, may have grounds for property damage claims. New Jersey's statute of limitations generally allows two years from the date of an accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Potential compensation in matters like this may include medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering, depending on individual circumstances. Anyone affected should consult applicable insurance policies and documentation promptly.
