Tractor-trailer carrying 34K pounds live crabs catches fire on I-81 near Morristown

A preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol said the driver was traveling on I-81 when he saw a fire break out near the rear trailer axle, prompting him to park the truck on the shoulder of the Exit 12 ramp.

A tractor-trailer hauling approximately 34,000 pounds of live crabs caught fire Wednesday morning on the Exit 12 off-ramp of I-81 North near Morristown, Tennessee, prompting an extended closure of the ramp. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary report, the driver was traveling northbound on I-81 when he noticed flames near the rear trailer axle. He safely maneuvered the truck onto the shoulder of the Exit 12 ramp and was able to detach the cab from the trailer before the trailer became fully engulfed in flames. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) responded to the scene, and officials worked to manage traffic disruptions while emergency crews extinguished the blaze. TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi reported that approximately two-thirds of the live crabs being transported were successfully salvaged despite the fire. THP investigators believe the fire originated from a malfunctioning rear trailer brake. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The ramp remained closed for several hours before reopening to traffic just after 4:30 p.m. the same day.

Location and Infrastructure

Exit 12 on I-81 North serves as a key access point for motorists traveling to and from the Morristown area in Hamblen County, Tennessee. This stretch of I-81 is a heavily traveled corridor connecting East Tennessee to Virginia and points further north, carrying significant volumes of commercial truck traffic daily. Off-ramps like Exit 12 are common locations for mechanical failures to become apparent, as vehicles decelerate and drivers gain the opportunity to notice smoke, fire, or brake issues before continuing onto local roadways. Extended ramp closures at this interchange can create considerable delays for commuters and commercial vehicles alike, given the exit's role as a primary interchange for the region. Drivers in this corridor should remain alert for emergency vehicles, temporary signage, and lane shifts during incident response and cleanup operations.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Incidents involving commercial vehicle fires may raise questions of liability under Tennessee law, particularly where mechanical failure—such as a malfunctioning brake system—is a contributing factor. Under Tennessee's modified comparative fault framework, responsibility for resulting damages may be apportioned among multiple parties, including the vehicle operator, the motor carrier, or a maintenance provider, depending on the cause of the mechanical defect. Commercial trucking companies are generally required to carry substantial liability insurance, which may become relevant if property damage, cargo loss, or injuries result from an incident. Tennessee's statute of limitations generally allows one year from the date of an incident to file a personal injury claim, though this period can vary based on the specific circumstances involved. Potential compensation in similar cases may include property damage, medical expenses, or lost income, though outcomes depend heavily on individual facts.
