Crashes on Dallas North Tollway and I-635 cause traffic backups for North Texas commuters

Around 7 a.m., all lanes of northbound Dallas North Tollway in Addison were closed at Belt Line Road due to a crash, according to a traffic alert from North Texas Tollway Authority.

North Texas commuters faced significant delays Friday morning as multiple collisions shut down lanes across major highways in Dallas and Addison. The most serious incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. on northbound Dallas North Tollway in Addison at Belt Line Road, where all lanes were temporarily closed, according to the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). Emergency crews responded to the scene, and all lanes were reopened by approximately 7:35 a.m., though NTTA warned drivers to expect residual backups from the incident. Additional collisions compounded traffic problems across the region, including a multi-lane closure on southbound Interstate 635 at La Prada Drive in Dallas and another incident on southbound Loop 12 at Interstate 30 (Tom Landry Highway), where at least two lanes were shut down in each location. The Texas Department of Transportation tracked these incidents as emergency responders worked to clear the scenes and restore normal traffic flow during the busy morning rush hour.

Location and Infrastructure

The Dallas North Tollway serves as a critical north-south corridor through the northern Dallas suburbs, with the Belt Line Road intersection in Addison representing a high-traffic area connecting multiple commercial districts and residential communities. This tollway experiences heavy commuter traffic during morning and evening rush hours, with thousands of vehicles traveling between Plano, Addison, and Dallas proper. Interstate 635 (LBJ Freeway) at La Prada Drive is another major transportation artery in Dallas, forming part of the outer loop around the metropolitan area and carrying substantial commercial and commuter traffic. Loop 12 at its interchange with Interstate 30 (Tom Landry Highway) near downtown Dallas represents a complex intersection where multiple highway systems converge, creating naturally congested conditions during peak travel times. These locations feature multiple lanes, high speed limits, and heavy traffic volumes that can make accident scenes particularly hazardous for both motorists and emergency responders.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Texas law requires all drivers involved in accidents resulting in injury, death, or property damage exceeding $1,000 to file a crash report with the Texas Department of Transportation within ten days of the incident. Under Texas Transportation Code, motorists have responsibilities to maintain control of their vehicles and drive at speeds reasonable for traffic conditions, which becomes particularly relevant during morning rush hour congestion. Victims of traffic accidents in Texas may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering through insurance claims or legal action. Texas follows a modified comparative negligence rule, meaning injured parties can recover damages as long as they are not more than 50% at fault for the accident. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in Texas is generally two years from the date of the accident, making timely consultation with legal professionals important for preserving rights. Insurance considerations often involve coordination between multiple parties' liability coverage, personal injury protection, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
