Fatal crash closes all lanes of northbound US75, officials say

The victim is believed to be the driver of the disabled vehicle, according to DFR, and the passenger in that vehicle was transported to the hospital for her injuries along with the driver of the second vehicle.

A man is dead following a multi-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of US-75 (Central Expressway) near Royal Lane in Dallas, Texas, early Sunday morning. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue officials, the crash occurred around 8 a.m. when a vehicle that had already become disabled on the highway was struck by another driver. The impact pinned the driver of the disabled vehicle beneath the wreckage, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger who was also in the disabled vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision was likewise taken to the hospital. Emergency crews from Dallas Fire-Rescue responded quickly to the scene, but the severity of the crash required all northbound lanes of US-75 to be shut down while first responders worked to clear the wreckage and investigate. The closure forced northbound drivers to exit early at Meadow Road. As of the latest update, officials have not released a timeline for when the highway will fully reopen, and the investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

Location and Infrastructure

US-75 (Central Expressway) is one of the busiest north-south corridors in Dallas, carrying heavy commuter and weekend traffic through the city's core. The stretch near Royal Lane sits in a densely traveled section of the highway, close to the North Dallas and Vickery Meadow areas, where multiple lanes merge and exit ramps are closely spaced. Disabled vehicles stopped in active travel lanes on high-speed freeways like US-75 pose a significant hazard, particularly during periods of reduced visibility or heavy traffic flow. The Meadow Road exit, used as the designated alternate route during this closure, is a key access point for drivers navigating around incidents in this corridor. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintains this segment of highway, which is regularly monitored for congestion and incident response given its high traffic volume and history of collisions involving stopped or disabled vehicles.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Texas law, individuals injured in motor vehicle collisions may be entitled to pursue compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. Texas follows a modified comparative negligence rule, meaning a party's recovery may be reduced or barred if they are found more than 50% responsible for the crash. Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code generally allows two years from the date of the incident to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim. Insurance considerations may involve the at-fault driver's liability coverage, as well as underinsured or uninsured motorist provisions if applicable. Families of victims in fatal crashes may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 71. Those affected are encouraged to consult with a qualified professional to understand their specific rights and options.
