Child critically injured after fleeing suspect crashes into vehicle, Dallas Police say

Police say the suspect was speeding and crashed into three vehicles when he drove through the intersection of North Masters Drive.

A child suffered critical injuries Tuesday evening after a suspect fleeing Dallas Police officers crashed into three separate vehicles near the intersection of North Masters Drive and Elam Road. According to the Dallas Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 10300 block of Elam Road just before 5 p.m. following a report of a woman being assaulted. Police say the suspect, 54-year-old Ronie Alcaraz, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend while intoxicated and took her phone as she tried to call for help. When officers arrived at the scene, Alcaraz fled in a vehicle; officers did not initiate a pursuit. Police say Alcaraz was speeding when he drove through the intersection at North Masters Drive, striking three vehicles. A child riding in one of the struck vehicles was ejected and transported to a hospital with critical injuries. Alcaraz was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including evading arrest causing serious bodily injury, aggravated assault-family violence with a deadly weapon, and interference with an emergency call. As of the latest reports, bond had not yet been set.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred near the intersection of North Masters Drive and Elam Road, a residential corridor in southeast Dallas that carries a mix of local and cross-town traffic. Elam Road functions as a connector street linking neighborhoods to nearby commercial areas, while North Masters Drive serves as a signalized north-south route through the surrounding community. Intersections like this one, controlled by traffic signals, depend on all drivers obeying signal timing and posted speed limits to remain safe; a vehicle traveling at high speed can cross multiple lanes of traffic before other drivers have time to react. The area is primarily residential, with nearby homes, driveways, and side streets that generate regular pedestrian and vehicle activity, increasing the potential severity of any high-speed collision at the intersection.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Texas law, individuals injured by a fleeing or reckless driver may have grounds to pursue a civil claim separate from any criminal proceedings against the at-fault party. Texas follows a modified comparative negligence standard, meaning an injured party may recover damages if they are found less than 51% responsible for the incident, though this crash involves an allegedly fleeing suspect rather than the injured parties. Claims may involve the at-fault driver's auto insurance policy, and in some cases uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage held by those affected. Texas generally imposes a two-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims, meaning affected individuals should be aware of this deadline when considering legal action. Potential compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. Anyone affected should consult a licensed attorney to evaluate their specific circumstances.
