Dallas police officer involved in crash on eastbound I-635 at Miller Road

There were multiple crashes on I-635 on Friday morning.

A Dallas police officer was involved in a crash on eastbound Interstate 635 at Miller Road in northeast Dallas at about 5:30 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026. According to police, no one was hurt. Authorities have not released the cause of the crash, how many vehicles were involved, or the identities of anyone involved, including the officer. An NBC 5 photojournalist went to the scene as more information was gathered. Police have confirmed that the scene has been cleared. The crash is under investigation, and no arrests have been made. This collision was one of several crashes reported on I-635 during Friday morning's commute. Drivers using the eastbound lanes near Miller Road early Friday may have had delays while the scene was cleared. Investigators have not yet released anything about what led up to the crash, and more information may come out as the investigation continues. Drivers who travel this corridor regularly should allow extra time and stay alert during early-morning hours, when traffic builds quickly.

Location and Infrastructure

Interstate 635, known locally as the LBJ Freeway, loops around much of northern and eastern Dallas. It connects major routes including US 75, I-30, and I-35E. The Miller Road interchange is in northeast Dallas, near the Dallas–Garland city line. Frontage roads there feed signalized intersections that serve nearby homes and businesses. The eastern section of I-635, between US 75 and I-30, has been the focus of the Texas Department of Transportation's LBJ East reconstruction project, which widens the freeway and rebuilds its interchanges. Where work zones are active, drivers may find shifted lanes, narrower shoulders, and temporary barriers. At 5:30 a.m., drivers are traveling before sunrise and depend on overhead lighting and reflective pavement markings. Traffic on this corridor usually rises quickly as the morning rush begins.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Texas follows an at-fault insurance system. Drivers must carry minimum liability coverage of $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash, and $25,000 for property damage. Under the state's proportionate responsibility rules in Chapter 33 of the Civil Practice and Remedies Code, a party found more than 50 percent responsible cannot recover damages. When a government vehicle is involved, the Texas Tort Claims Act may apply. That law limits municipal liability and generally requires written notice of a claim within six months, and city charters may set their own notice requirements. For most personal injury and property damage claims, the statute of limitations is two years. Compensation may include vehicle repair or replacement costs, rental expenses, medical costs, lost wages, and non-economic damages, depending on the circumstances.
