Passenger killed in crash after driver ran red light in Fort Worth, police say

According to police, the driver of the first vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of 4800 I-35 service road and 700 East Felix.

One person was killed and several others were hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash in Fort Worth early Monday morning, according to police. The collision occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of East Felix Street and the Interstate 35 West service road, near the 4800 block of the I-35 service road and 700 East Felix Street. Police responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. According to investigators, one vehicle was traveling north on the I-35 West service road toward East Felix Street when the driver ran a red light at the intersection. A second vehicle, which had a green light, was heading east on East Felix Street at the time. The two vehicles collided, with the eastbound car striking the front end of the northbound vehicle. The impact then sent the first vehicle into a traffic signal pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. The passenger in the first vehicle suffered major injuries and later died at a local hospital. Other individuals involved in the crash were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment; their conditions have not been released. Police believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Location and Infrastructure

The intersection of East Felix Street and the I-35 West service road sits in a high-traffic corridor on Fort Worth's south side, where local surface streets intersect with frontage roads running parallel to one of North Texas's busiest interstate corridors. Intersections where service roads meet cross streets like East Felix are common sites for red-light-related collisions, particularly during early morning and late-night hours when traffic volume is lower and drivers may be more inclined to speed or misjudge signal timing. The intersection is controlled by traffic signals, one of which was struck and damaged during this crash. This stretch of I-35W frontage road serves as a key access route for drivers entering and exiting the interstate near south Fort Worth, and the area sees regular commuter and commercial traffic throughout the day.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Texas law, drivers who run red lights and cause collisions may be found negligent per se, as violating traffic signal laws constitutes a breach of a statutory duty of care. Texas follows a modified comparative negligence rule, meaning compensation may be reduced if multiple parties share fault, and recovery is barred if a claimant is found more than 50% responsible. Families of a person killed in a crash may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, while injured survivors may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. Texas generally imposes a two-year statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims, though exceptions may apply. Insurance considerations may involve claims against the at-fault driver's liability coverage, as well as potential underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. Those affected should consult official records and qualified professionals to understand their specific rights.
