After getting out, the person began walking along the ramp and was struck by a Kia SUV.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV on Wednesday evening, October 7, 2026, after getting out of a disabled vehicle on Interstate 30 in Grand Prairie, Texas. According to the Grand Prairie Police Department, the collision happened at about 7:50 p.m. on the entrance ramp to the eastbound I-30 TEXpress lanes near MacArthur Boulevard. Investigators said the pedestrian had been traveling in a vehicle that broke down. After getting out, the person began walking along the ramp and was struck by a Kia SUV. Grand Prairie Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Police said the SUV driver was not injured and is cooperating with investigators. The pedestrian has not been publicly identified. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office will release the person's identity after family members have been notified. The Grand Prairie Police Department continues to investigate the collision, and no further details about its circumstances have been released. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.

Location and Infrastructure

Interstate 30 is the main east–west freeway linking Dallas and Fort Worth. Its Grand Prairie segment carries heavy commuter and commercial traffic between those cities and neighboring Arlington and Irving. The TEXpress lanes along this corridor are managed toll lanes set apart from the general-purpose lanes, with dedicated entrance and exit ramps at select interchanges, including near MacArthur Boulevard. Entrance ramps are built for vehicles accelerating to highway speed and often have limited shoulder space, which leaves little room for stranded motorists or anyone on foot. By 7:50 p.m. in early October it is dark in North Texas, so drivers have less time to see a pedestrian ahead. Safety officials generally advise motorists whose vehicles break down on a freeway to stay inside with seat belts fastened and hazard lights on, when it is safe to do so, while they wait for help.

Legal Rights and Considerations

In Texas, pedestrian rights and duties are set out in Chapter 552 of the Texas Transportation Code, which also requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians. Texas applies modified comparative responsibility under Chapter 33 of the Civil Practice and Remedies Code. Under that rule, a claimant's recovery is reduced by their percentage of responsibility and is barred if that share exceeds 50 percent. Wrongful death and survival actions fall under Chapter 71 of the same code. Under Section 16.003, they generally must be filed within two years of the date of death. Insurance considerations may include the at-fault driver's liability coverage, which Texas requires at minimums of $30,000 per person, $60,000 per crash for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. Personal injury protection or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may also apply. Compensation in fatal crashes may include funeral and medical expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship.
