A tragic collision on Antoine Drive in northwest Harris County claimed the life of a dedicated postal worker on Saturday, marking another devastating loss for the community and the United States Postal Service. Steven Marks, 58, was delivering mail to residents in the Northcliffe Manor neighborhood when his postal truck was struck from behind by a speeding Dodge pickup truck near the intersection of Antoine Drive and West Green Road. According to Harris County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Villacorta, the pickup driver, identified as Jose Romero, had just fled from a minor accident at Veterans Memorial Drive and Antoine Drive before losing control of his vehicle while traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. The violent rear-end collision occurred while Marks was conducting his regular mail delivery route along the residential section of Antoine Drive. Emergency responders rushed Marks to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Romero was taken into custody at the scene, where investigators noted signs of impairment during field sobriety testing. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the Harris County District Attorney's Office has accepted charges of intoxication manslaughter against Romero.
Location and Infrastructure
Antoine Drive is a major north-south thoroughfare in northwest Harris County, running through densely populated residential areas including the Northcliffe Manor neighborhood. The collision occurred on the southbound side of Antoine Drive, north of West Green Road and south of Veterans Memorial Drive, an area characterized by a mix of residential properties and local businesses. This section of Antoine Drive serves as a key route for commuters and local traffic, with postal workers and delivery vehicles regularly serving the neighborhood's residences. The roadway features typical suburban infrastructure with residential driveways and mailboxes along the route where postal carriers make frequent stops. The fact that the driver had previously been involved in an accident just blocks away at Veterans Memorial and Antoine Drive before fleeing southbound highlights the continuous nature of this corridor and the dangers posed by reckless driving in areas where workers and residents are regularly present along the roadside.
Legal Rights and Considerations
Under Texas Penal Code Section 49.08, intoxication manslaughter occurs when a person operates a vehicle while intoxicated and causes the death of another individual, classified as a second-degree felony carrying potential penalties of 2 to 20 years in prison. The victim's family may pursue wrongful death claims under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 71, which allows surviving spouses, children, and parents to seek compensation for loss of companionship, mental anguish, and lost future earnings. As a postal worker killed in the line of duty, Steven Marks' family may also be entitled to federal death benefits through the Federal Employees' Compensation Act. Texas law requires wrongful death claims to be filed within two years of the date of death. Victims of intoxication-related crashes may recover damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of financial support, and loss of household services. Because this incident involved an alleged fleeing driver who had just left another accident scene, additional criminal charges related to leaving the scene of an accident may apply under Texas Transportation Code Section 550.021.
