A 15-year-old boy has died following a serious two-vehicle collision in north Harris County on Wednesday evening, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. The crash occurred at approximately 5:55 p.m. in the 1100 block of Richcrest at West Hardy, when a BMW carrying five teenagers ran a stop sign at high speed and struck a Honda occupied by a single adult driver. The victim, identified as Orlin Perez Regalado, age 15, was ejected from the BMW and later died at the hospital. Investigators confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The 16-year-old driver of the BMW was transported to Houston Northwest Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two 18-year-old passengers in the BMW were uninjured, while a fourth passenger fled the scene. The 40-year-old driver of the Honda also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported for medical care. Authorities stated that alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the collision. Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene and continue to investigate.
Location and Infrastructure
The crash occurred at the intersection of Richcrest Drive and West Hardy Road in north Harris County, Texas, a predominantly residential and light commercial corridor in the unincorporated northwest Houston area. West Hardy Road is a well-traveled surface street that serves as a connector route between several established neighborhoods and major thoroughfares, experiencing moderate-to-heavy traffic during evening hours. The intersection is governed by stop sign traffic control, placing the legal obligation to yield on drivers approaching from the controlled approach. This type of intersection — a stop-controlled cross street meeting a higher-volume road — is statistically associated with elevated collision risk, particularly when drivers fail to comply with posted signs. The area falls under Harris County Sheriff's Office jurisdiction and is patrolled as part of the county's unincorporated road network. Nearby landmarks include residential subdivisions and commercial properties along the West Hardy corridor north of Houston's city limits.
Legal Rights and Considerations
Under Texas law, running a stop sign and causing a collision that results in death may give rise to both criminal and civil liability. The Harris County Sheriff's Office has indicated that the 16-year-old driver could face charges of criminally negligent homicide as the investigation progresses. In Texas, criminally negligent homicide is a state jail felony under Texas Penal Code § 19.05. On the civil side, surviving family members of the deceased may have standing to pursue a wrongful death claim under Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code § 71.001, as well as a survival action. Texas follows a modified comparative fault rule, meaning liability may be apportioned among multiple parties. The general statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims in Texas is two years from the date of the incident. The injured Honda driver may also be entitled to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering through applicable insurance or civil litigation. All parties are advised to consult a licensed Texas attorney to understand their specific rights.
