I-45 crash in Houston: Man hit by 3 vehicles near Rankin Road

According to the sheriff's office, a man was reportedly trying to cross the freeway when he was hit by at least three vehicles.

A man was killed Monday night after being struck by at least three vehicles while attempting to cross Interstate 45 in Houston, Texas. The fatal incident occurred on the northbound lanes of the I-45 North Freeway near Rankin Road, with authorities responding to the scene around 9:30 p.m. The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the man was on foot and attempting to cross the freeway when he was hit by multiple vehicles in succession. He was pronounced dead at the scene. All three drivers involved remained at the scene following the crash, cooperating with investigators — a legally significant detail. Authorities indicated that alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor. As of the latest reports, all northbound lanes of I-45, which had been fully shut down near Rankin Road following the crash, have since reopened. No individuals involved — including the victim or the three drivers — have been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin and the completion of the investigation.

Location and Infrastructure

The crash occurred on the northbound side of Interstate 45 North Freeway near the Rankin Road corridor in northern Harris County, a heavily traveled stretch of highway connecting Houston to its northern suburbs. I-45 North is one of the region's busiest freeways, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles daily and operating at high speeds, typically posted at 65–70 mph in this corridor. The area near Rankin Road is a transitional zone between dense urban development and suburban commercial strips, with limited pedestrian infrastructure in the immediate freeway vicinity. Interstate highways in Texas are not designed for pedestrian access, and there are no legal crossings for foot traffic on this stretch of I-45. The combination of high vehicle speeds, multiple lanes of traffic, and low nighttime visibility makes this type of location particularly hazardous for anyone on foot.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Texas law, pedestrians on interstate highways are generally prohibited, which may affect determinations of liability and fault in this incident. However, drivers also have a legal duty of care to avoid collisions when reasonably possible, and fault is rarely assigned solely to one party without a thorough investigation. The families of individuals killed in traffic incidents in Texas may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code, Chapter 71. Eligible damages can include funeral and burial expenses, lost future earnings, loss of companionship, and mental anguish suffered by surviving family members. Texas has a two-year statute of limitations for wrongful death and personal injury claims, meaning legal action generally must be initiated within two years of the date of the incident. The three drivers involved may also wish to consult legal counsel regarding their rights and any potential liability exposure, even as preliminary reports suggest no signs of impairment.
