A serious multi-vehicle collision on Broadway at Monona Drive in Monona, Wisconsin, left seven people injured on Tuesday afternoon, including one man who remains in critical condition. According to Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney, the crash involved seven vehicles in total. Preliminary findings released Wednesday indicate that the driver of an eastbound pickup truck on Broadway suffered a medical emergency, rendering him unconscious. The unattended vehicle accelerated rapidly as it approached the signalized intersection at Monona Drive, where multiple vehicles were stopped at a red light. The truck struck several of those vehicles before coming to rest. A woman who initially sustained serious injuries has since been stabilized, while six drivers and several additional occupants sustained injuries expected to be non-life-threatening. The truck's driver was not seriously hurt and is cooperating with investigators. The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted the Monona Police Department (MOPD) in processing the scene, and evidence was collected for toxicology testing as part of the ongoing investigation.
Location and Infrastructure
The crash occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Monona Drive in Monona, Wisconsin, a mid-sized city situated along the eastern shore of Lake Monona, adjacent to Madison. Broadway is a primary east-west corridor through the city, and its intersection with Monona Drive — a major north-south artery — serves as one of Monona's more heavily trafficked crosspoints, connecting residential neighborhoods to commercial areas and regional roadways. The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal, and at the time of the crash, multiple vehicles were lawfully stopped at a red light, limiting their ability to avoid the approaching truck. The area sees consistent commuter and commercial traffic, and the configuration of the intersection — with vehicles queuing at a signal — created conditions in which a loss-of-control vehicle could impact multiple stopped cars simultaneously.
Legal Rights and Considerations
Individuals injured in this crash may have legal rights and options under Wisconsin law. Wisconsin follows a modified comparative negligence standard, meaning injured parties may seek compensation even if they share some degree of fault, provided their share does not exceed 51%. Given the preliminary findings suggesting the at-fault driver experienced a medical emergency, questions of negligence, foreseeability, and the "sudden emergency" doctrine may become relevant in any civil proceedings. Wisconsin's statute of limitations for personal injury claims is generally three years from the date of the incident. Injured parties may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage through the at-fault driver's liability insurance or their own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Those affected are encouraged to document all injuries, medical treatment, and property damage promptly and consult with a qualified legal professional to understand their specific rights.
